Grand Café Style in the center of Ghent
WSBdesign.com was asked at the end of 2023 to redesign the ground floor of the monumental building of Optiek Matthijs in Ghent. Ten years ago, WSB thoroughly renovated this building and restored the historic facade, in close but commercial coordination with monument conservation. Now the challenge was to create more spaciousness for a comfortable seated sale. This in combination with the appearance of a great Grand Café.

The interesting thing about this store is the supporting wall that optically splits the building in two. The symbiosis between contemporary elements and a ceiling from the 17th century emphasizes how modern and historic design can strongly reinforce each other. Brothers Jan and Karel Matthijs, together with their customers, are very satisfied with the new customer journey that this store interior offers. Thanks to accurate planning and tight execution, the renovated optician could be reopened in April 2024.
